Big, fashionable coupes were increasingly popular in
the 1970's. Hence, you would probably see an Eldorado Biarritz or a Continental
IV cruising the streets of Hollywood. In today's review, let's take a
look at Jaguar's former entry into the big coupe market. The XJS.
Powered by a massive V12, the XJS was introduced in 1975, and ticked all the boxes. Luxury
equipment- Yes. Power accessories- Yes. Torque and POWERRRR- Definitely. The
first-generation XJS had the world's softest suspension, and the most luxury
you could find in a posh imported car. Sounds great, right? It will, if you
know how to drive. Yes, like all British cars of its day, the XJS broke down
like crazy, dripping oil and water everywhere. Unless, of course, you granny
drove it. Which nobody did, because really, why would you rather hot lap your
car at 30 miles per hour or 130? Basically, the XJ was a masterpiece, but not
without a price. When it was redesigned in 1991, it had more of a flowing body
design, but still kept the slight boxiness. It was discontinued in 1996 with a
limited-production Celebration edition.
