Coupes. They're the right of passage for high school. They're fast. They're fun.
They're cheap. Sort of. In today's review, let's take a look at the Hyundai
Scoupe. Based off of the old lady's Hyundai Excel, (that's Excel, not XL, as it
definitely wasn't!) it was basically a topped up high-performance version of a
slow, boring econobox. Wow, that sounds great, doesn't it? It does...until you
look under the hood. It had a 1.5 liter 92 horsepower inline four. Mmm, the
sweet smell of burning oil. The name was a portmanteau of sporty and coupe.
This is questionable, however, as the rear badge featured the "S" being larger
than the "coupe." So in Europe, it was called the "Hyundai S-Coup'e. It was
rated by the BBC's Top Gear TV show as the "second best first car for under
£2000", losing to the 1988 Volvo 840 GLE Turbo Estate. Keeping with the
tradition of 1990's imports, the interior is plastic. But at least it's good at
handbrake turns. It's second generation came in 1993, and it was discontinued
in 1995.
